David Breakstone:  Keep Dreaming: 'Chief Rabbinate dismantled'

The matter of the flotilla and Israel's embargo on ships reaching Gaza continues to dominate news here and is, of course, our most urgent concern.

Below, please find a link to my latest instalment in the "Keep Dreaming" column that appeared in The Jerusalem Post last weekend dealing with this subject: "Chief Rabbinate dismantled as Haredim take up arms in defense of Zionism". http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=177377

Analysis of Israeli Political Scene:  Restoring Truth's Good Name

There are two camps in Israel's public discourse: the "truth camp" - small, colorful, dynamic and ideological; and the "apathetic camp" - large, colorless, passive and hedonistic. Both camps are liable to lead the State of Israel to catastrophe. by Avi Sagi and Yedidia Stern [Full article...]

David Breakstone:  An Epistle to Zion

Yom Yerushalayim, marking the reunification of Jerusalem following the Six Day War, is being celebrated this week on Wednesday, May 12. Over the years, the holiday has somehow been transformed from an opportunity for unadulterated rejoicing to a day suffused with political and religious overtones that tend to emphasize the divisiveness rather than the unity of Israeli society.

David Breakstone:  Some of my best friends are Israeli

Some of my best friends are Israeli. Some aren't. A number of them used to be, but for one reason or another they've moved away. It seems that every time I begin getting really close to someone, they up and leave. Right now they can be found in places as far afield as Atlanta and Maputo. That's not a typo; it's the capital of Mozambique. They give me all sorts of reasons for their scattering abroad. Shattered dreams. Parents. Children. Jobs. [Full article...]

David Breakstone:  The Jewish State's Buried Treasures

Fill in the blank: In the year 2009, Israel celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of _____. Chances are that if you spent any time in the country over the past 12 months and were semiconscious, your answer would be "Tel Aviv." Unless you are still celebrating May 1 as International Workers' Day and are a trivia freak, in which case you may have responded: "Deganya," the very first kibbutz, which happened to come into being at the very same time as the first Jewish city in modern times.
